Section 01
Why a fan makes a meaningful gift
A Chinese fan is one of the few gifts that carries its own message. The motif on the leaf is a wish — purity, longevity, prosperity, love — so the fan you give says something specific about the person and the occasion. It is also a practical object: beautiful, useful in summer, and small enough to keep for years.
The custom is old. Ming scholars exchanged painted fans as tokens of friendship, and the practice survives in weddings, festivals and birthdays. The vocabulary of wishes is in Chinese fan symbolism; this guide matches fans to occasions.
