Section 01
The round fan: shape and symbolism
A Chinese round fan is exactly what its name says: a circular fan — tuánshàn (团扇) in Mandarin — made of silk or gauze stretched over a frame and mounted on a handle. The circle is not an accident: in Chinese culture it echoes the moon and the idea of wholeness, and 团 (tuán) carries the sense of reunion and togetherness.
That meaning makes the round fan the most symbolic of the types of Chinese fans. Where the folding fan speaks of the scholar's public world, the round fan speaks of grace, family and the private world — and of the moon itself.
